So here’s a question to ponder: What if the resurrection of Jesus – the holiday we’re celebrating this month – never happened?
This is more than just a theological debate. The answer to this question changes everything.
If Jesus really didn’t rise from the dead, then…
-Jesus was not God. He was just a good man, just another prophet, just another teacher.
-The Bible isn’t true. If Jesus really didn’t rise from the dead like the Bible says, we can’t trust that it’s truthful in any other area. It’s just a collection of odd fairy-tales and outdated commands.
-This life is all there is, and death is final. If Jesus is still dead, then there is nothing after death. If He didn’t resurrect, no one else will. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die (forever).
What if Jesus really did die on the cross for our sins and He also rose from the dead? That changes everything.
If Jesus really did resurrect (and He did), then…
-Jesus is God. He was not just another good man or prophet. When Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life – no man comes to the Father except through me”, He meant it. That means to get to heaven, you must trust in Christ alone.
-The Bible is true. The overarching theme of the entire Bible is God saving sinners, and God doing so through His Son. If Jesus really rose from the dead, it proves He was God, and it proves the Bible has bearing on our lives today.
-This life is not all there is. It is temporary, and so is death. Eternity awaits all of us – either heaven or hell. What is done in this life matters. Trusting in Christ is the most important issue in your life.
It is impossible to put other teachers or philosophers or religious leaders in the same category as Jesus. No one else – not Buddha, not Confucius, not Ghandi, not Mohammad – no one but Jesus has risen from the dead. No one but Jesus.
“You must make your choice. Either this man [Jesus] was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God.” – C. S. Lewis
So you see, this question of Jesus resurrecting from the dead affects us all – not just Christians – but every single person on the planet.
With that in mind, you are invited to join us for two very important gatherings this month:
– Good Friday service, March 29th, 7pm at the Chaska Community Center. We will explore exactly what Jesus accomplished on the cross.
– Easter Sunday, March 31st, 10am, also at the CCC. We will examine the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus, and then we will celebrate it.
